Biomechanical (MSK) Assessment

Finding the cause of foot, ankle and leg pain, not just treating the symptoms.

What an MSK podiatrist does

An MSK (musculoskeletal) specialist podiatrist is trained to assess the problem you are experiencing, work out which structures are affected, and find the cause.

The assessment

A biomechanical assessment involves taking a thorough history and a physical examination, including watching how you walk (gait analysis). From this we put together a treatment plan, which will include advice on footwear and lifestyle, along with therapeutic exercises.

Sometimes insoles or orthoses are needed to maintain or improve how your feet function. Solutions take a holistic approach and are tailored to you and your problem.

Chair side orthotics can be made and provided during the initial appointment. Off-the-shelf orthotics are available, or if more bespoke insoles are required we will cast the feet, write a prescription, and use our orthotic lab for tailor made support.

What qualifies as an MSK appointment?

If you are unsure if you require an MSK appointment, these are typical of the conditions assessed:

  • Lower limb pain
  • Plantar fasciitis (policeman's heel)
  • Pain from flat feet or high arches
  • Leg length difference
  • Lower limb post surgery issues
  • Tendinopathies
  • Achilles problems
  • Bone pain in the feet and ankles
  • General hip/knee/ankle conditions

Questions

Will I need insoles?

Not always. Sometimes insoles or orthoses are needed, and they are priced individually (£15 to £300) because they are specific to you.

What should I bring?

Please bring the shoes you wear every day, and wear clothing on your legs that can be rolled up so we can assess your knees and lower legs.

How do I pay?

All fees are paid on the day of your visit. We take card payments.

Can I claim the cost back from my insurer?

We will give you a receipt so you can claim from your insurer, and we can provide information for insurance companies. To find out how you could claim back your money for podiatric care, visit Simplyhealth.
